How to Store Your Cardboard Boxes Properly

Storing cardboard boxes and boxes for moving for future use is easy, and it’s one of the reasons why they’re so widely used today.

But the thing is, you need to store them properly to get the most out of them. If you don’t, you may run into some issues that can make their storage more of a hassle than a benefit.

Keep in mind that storing cardboard boxes is more than throwing them in a cabinet and keeping them there. If you want to store these boxes safely and effectively, you need to be more strategic with how you store them.

Here’s how to do it right:

1. Empty them completely. Before storing your cardboard boxes, make sure there’s nothing left inside them. Remove any paper, packaging, or any other materials that can prevent you from flattening or folding them properly.

2.Flatten them. Flattening is the most space-efficient way to store your cardboard boxes, allowing you to keep multiple boxes together in a limited space.

3.Group similar-sized boxes together. If you’re working with multiple cardboard boxes, group them by size as much as possible. This will help you organise your storage space and make adding more cardboard boxes in the future easier.

4.Tie them up. After grouping similar-sized boxes, tie them up with a sturdy rope or string. This will help keep them together throughout storage and maximise your storage space.

5.Check on them occasionally. While you don’t need to check your cardboard boxes regularly, you do need to check them every now and then to make sure they’re still in good condition. Occasional checking will also help you spot storage issues (see below) and address them accordingly.

Issues with Storing Cardboard Boxes – What You Want to Avoid

When storing your cardboard boxes, there are some things you need to watch out for:

  • Wasted space – This usually happens when you don’t properly fold or flatten your boxes, making them take up more space than they should. Over time, this can prevent you from putting more boxes (or any other items) in your storage space.
  • Moisture – Moisture and high humidity are some of the worst enemies of cardboard boxes, making them prone mould and mildew. Make sure you don’t store your cardboard boxes in areas where they can easily get wet or damp.
  • Insects – Unfortunately, many bugs and insects love the cardboard materials in boxes, which serve as sources of food or nesting grounds. To prevent insects from taking over your cardboard boxes, make sure they’re clean and free from other organic materials (e.g. food scraps) before storing them. It also helps to check up on your cardboard boxes frequently to make sure they’re not infested with bugs.
  • Flammable materials – Cardboard boxes are flammable, so you need to keep this in mind when storing them in your home. Keep them away from flammable sources and make sure they’re not near any other flammable materials.
